Roopkund is a mysterious lake at an altitude of 5,020 m – the large number of skeletons ( as many as 200, according to some estimates ) in the bed of the lake and its vicinity continue to puzzle visitors and trekkers alike. Roopkund trek is one of the most famous Himlayan treks which requires prior trekking experience and good fitness level.

Roopkund trek is ideal for trekkers looking for a week long Himalayan trek which offers everything, from scenic meadows to snow trails to the view of higher Himalayan peaks.

Who can do Roopkund Trek ?

  Roopkund can be a challenging especially on the higher reaches during winter time due to snow. A physically active & healthy person can do this trek. Recommended age group 12 years or above.

 Day 1  Kathgodam to Lohajung

Altitude – 2,450 m

Road travel from Kathgodam ( last railhead ) to Lohajung

One can drive further to Wan where rest house & transport is available.

Roopkund is a popular trek especially in summers when the trail can get crowded. Travel to Lohajung from either Karnaprayag or Kathgodam; both via Gwaldam.

 Day 2  Lohajung to Bedni Bugyal

Altitude – 3,354 m

Trek – 12 km

Time – 6 hours

A broad and steep trail goes through forests to a vast and open meadow on the top. Here, there is a small lake, a temple, good places to camp and sweeping views.

 Day 3  Bedni Bugyal to Bugwa Basa to Roopkund 

Altitude – 5,020 m

Trek – 15 km

Time – 11 hours

Continue on the wide trail. It is tiring day as you gain significant altitude. Higher up, the ridge flattens out.

Follow the trail again; it is difficult if snowbound. Descend to the lake which you can see from above. Return to Bugwa Basa.

 Day 4  Bugwa Basa to Bhuna 

Altitude – 2,870 m

Trek – 11 km

Time – 4 hours

Alternate route of descent to Sutol is possible from the upper slopes.

Steep descent to Bhuna via Pathar Nichauni.

 Day 5  Bhuna to Kanol / Sitel

Altitude – 2,000 m

Trek – 18 km

Time – 4 hours

A long walk in the valley on a village trail. There is a road from Kanol / Sitel for the drive to Ghat.

 Day 6  Kanol to Ghat and Karnaprayag 

Altitude – 1,330 m

The road will take you to Ghat along Nandakini river and then, to the Karnaprayag-Badrinath road. It you wish to go via Gwaldam, return on the same trail to Wan.

Things To Carry

  1.  A medium size backpack (for carrying essentials) max. 35-40 Ltr
  2. rain jacket / poncho ( it can rain any day in Mountains )
  3. a small hand towel
  4. a spare T-shirt & lower ( just in case you wanna change )
  5. sunscreen ( in case its sunny)
  6. sunglasses
  7. a sun cap
  8. a personal torch (for camp tent)
  9.  a proper water bottle ( must . . we try to avoid using disposable bottles on trails)
  10.  a personal plate / spoon (must)
  11. a small poly bag for keeping all food/snack wrappers ( leave nothing on trails except your footprints) 🙂

Clothing suggestions for the trail :

Hiking up the mountain during day time / in the sun will be quite hot & sweaty so use light & comfortable clothing.

  1. a loose / comfy long sleeve cotton t-shirt ( use light colored one )
  2. a good track pant / sports lower
  3. a sun cap
  4.  sunglasses
  5. good hiking shoes ( Quechua / Salomon etc. ) or good sport shoe will do ( Nike / Addidas )


Clothing Suggestions for Evening/Night at Campsite :

  1. woollen sweater / sweatshirt
  2. proper winter jacket ( not a bulky one )
  3.  a warm woollen cap
  4. gloves ( optional )
  5. inner thermals ( keep them as you might feel cold at night)

Mountains get quite cold in the evening/night so be properly equipped

Kathgodam to Lohajung

Bus – Direct private buses are available from Kathgodam to Lohajung 

Bus departure timings : 6:00-6:30 am

Fare : INR 250 per person (approx)

Taxi – Direct taxis are available for Lohajung at Taxi Stand near Kathgodam railway station.

Fare : INR 4,500 (approx.)
